Oh, these are magnificent! I love the thick rich fringe on the button blanket. The kids in my class made a version of a button blanket earlier this year out of a paper bag. The bags had to be worked and worked to soften them like a hide. I can’t wait to show the kids your photos! Thanks~ Kari
That sounds interesting Kari, have you got any pictures of the kids button blankets? I’d love to see them – I bet they love being in your class, you are always doing neat things with them.
Here are a few descriptions of the blankets from the Museum – the thick fringed robe (black and white one) is a Chilkat Ceremonial robe made from Mountain Goat Wool and Cedar Bark.
The one with the red waves through it is a Cloth, Leather and Moose Hoof Dance Apron. The headress below it is made from Grizzly Bear claws (huge aren’t they?) The one with the figure appliqued on it is a Button Tunic. Finally, the leggings are made from Mountain Goat Wool, Cedar Bark and Puffin Beak.
Incredible!
Utterly amazing and such creative ingenuity! Thank you for the descriptions. I hope I still have the photos saved from the button blankets. I will post them if I do. I will go to bed dreaming about those Grizzly Bear claws! Thank you, thank you!
PS I post ed a photo on my blog with daughter Karyn and myself standing in front of the button blankets the kids made!! Thanks again for the photo tour and visit!
I like using the pictures for the Wordless Wednesday, but don’t like that I can’t put descriptors underneath, lol.
I’m off now to check out the Button blanket pictures on your blog Kari! Thanks
